These activities addressed different aspects of transformer condition, voltage transformation, arrester electrical characteristics and breaker operation, providing measurement data for commissioning and equipment assessment.

At a photovoltaic substation, the main transformer, switching equipment and surge arresters perform different functions. Test instruments, connections and reference information therefore need to match each asset. The field test configuration covered winding deformation test equipment, a transformer turns ratio tester, a circuit breaker analyzer and electrical test equipment appropriate for the surge arresters under test. The 220 kV designation refers to the substation voltage level; each asset’s ratings must be established from its nameplate and technical documentation.

On the morning of October 1, the main transformer underwent winding deformation assessment as part of commissioning testing. This assessment helps investigate possible changes in winding condition following transport and installation. Interpretation requires suitable reference measurements and controlled test conditions; a single measurement does not establish that a winding has deformed. Where frequency response analysis is used, terminal connections, lead routing, grounding, tap position and transformer state affect trace comparisons. Differences should first be checked for configuration changes and repeatability, then assessed alongside the equipment history and complementary electrical tests.

That afternoon, transformer turns ratio testing checked the transformation relationship between windings and its correspondence with tap position. Reference values must be based on the transformer’s nameplate voltages, winding configuration and tap data. For a three-phase transformer, the instrument’s measurement method must also be understood so that line-voltage ratio, phase-voltage ratio and winding turns ratio are interpreted correctly. An unexpected result at a particular phase or tap should prompt a review of connections, settings and actual tap position before further investigation of the asset.

On October 1, testing focused on the surge arresters installed on the main transformer’s low-voltage-side busbar. Test items and applied voltage must follow the arrester type, rated parameters, manufacturer documentation and project test procedure. “Low-voltage side” describes this winding’s relationship to the transformer’s high-voltage side; it does not mean the busbar is an ordinary low-voltage distribution circuit. Records should identify the asset, test conditions, measurement voltage and corresponding current readings so that results can be compared with factory information or later measurements.

On October 4, switchgear circuit breaker testing addressed operating characteristics. These checks examine opening and closing timing and consistency between phases. Assessment must use the requirements for the specific breaker model and operating mechanism rather than a universal timing limit. Control supply conditions, mechanism charging state, test connections and operating sequence also affect the measurement. Unexpected readings should be repeated after these conditions have been verified. Operating-characteristic testing provides information about breaker operation; it does not verify the breaker’s complete interrupting capability.

Together, these activities covered the main transformer, switching equipment and busbar overvoltage protection equipment. For electrical contractors and commissioning teams, records that link asset identification, test configuration, original measurements and review findings support troubleshooting and provide useful references for future maintenance.

KV Hipot Power Equipment Co., Ltd. provides transformer testing, circuit breaker testing and high-voltage electrical test equipment for PV projects, electrical contractors and substation commissioning teams.
